A Lesson In Remembrance

Isaac asks questions about everything. While in Frankenmuth, MI we took a walk to the local fire station where a new monument was put up in honor of September 11th. At first, Isaac was most interested by the big piece of steel on top of the monument. But when I turned back around from chasing Lucas, this is what I saw…

I stood back and watched for a minute, my heart saddened by the conversation that I knew was about to take place.

And then he asked, “Mommy, what are these buildings on here for?” Oma took over watching Lucas while I stood with Isaac and explained to him what happened on the day that changed the world forever. We talked about the bad guys, the planes, the heroes, the collapse, and the people that died that day. He listened intently soaking it all in. He stood up and walked one more time around the entire monument, touched the steel piece quietly, then took my hand and we walked away. I wasn’t entirely sure he understood all that I told him (he’s 4, so part of me didn’t want him to understand). The next night he went for a walk with my Aunt and his second cousins. They went to the Seven-11 beside the fire station. When they got back, my Aunt told me how Isaac told them all about he monument and what it was there for…to remember the people that went to heaven.

I didn’t personally know anyone who died that day, but we all heard their stories and feel like we knew them in some way.  To those people and their families: We will never forget.

As we celebrate our freedom and the 4th of July this week, take a minute to remember all of those people who have and are currently serving and protecting our country every day.

Thank you for protecting us and our freedom!
