How Fast They Grow

I’m not sure that any mother really knows how it happens. One day you’re holding a cuddly little bundle of joy and then you blink…and all the sudden that bundle is now 4 years old. Still cute and cuddly but now seemingly all grown up.
Sitting on the porch in the mountains over Creeper Trail Weekend, I found myself reminiscing on all the sweet memories I have of Isaac & Madeline there. I flipped through these pictures when we got home. And it’s true, they’ve only gotten cuter and more cuddly with time.

I’ve never been more thankful that I am blessed with 2 amazing little boys who call me mom and 2 beautiful girls that call me Aunt Rachel.

I do everything I can to savor every minute with them and I try so hard not to blink!

Wolfpack Firsts

Tonight was Jr. Wolfpack Club night at the NC State Football game. We got tickets a couple weeks back and Isaac was so excited to be going to the game. It was Lucas’ first game and as soon as we walked into the stadium you could see the excitement on his face. He was dancing to the music, cheering, and having a great time!
IMAG0116IMAG0117
But let’s face it, that’s not the reason you all are clicking on this blog post to read it (thank you Anna for your facebook post where you and Brian are forcing me to write this as you claim it’s an important life event. ) Its’ a long story, but let’s start at the beginning…

This morning, I tried to do something good for the world and donated double red cells with the American Red Cross at our church. Basically, they take 2 units of blood, spin out the red cells and put the rest back. According to the paperwork not really any different from giving regular blood. Of course there were issues…it took them an hour to even call me back and then the return needle slipped on my last return so I didn’t get all of my second unit of“other blood” back. But they said to drink water and I would be just fine. So I went on with my day drinking tons of water.

On the way to the game, I carried Lucas on my shoulders for a little ways and noticed it made my shoulders feel weird. I took him down and we went on to see some friends from college before going into the stadium. Once in the stadium, we went all the way to our seats in the upper level. About 15 minutes after getting to the seats, I started feeling weird. Bright flashes in my eyes, a little lightheaded. I told Brian I was going to go down and get some water before the game started. Once down on the concourse, I had some water out of a water fountain and stood there for a minute. I still felt strange, so I asked an usher where the first aid station was and walked that way. I stood outside first aid for a minute, then ventured into the hallway thinking air conditioning would solve my problem. They had a water cooler, so I went on into the room and told them I’d given blood this morning and that I was feeling a little lightheaded and got some water. I sat and drank the first cup and felt better. I was getting ready to leave when they requested I let them take my blood pressure. The woman came over and put the cuff on my left arm, pumped it up, then looked confused. She did it again. Then she said, I’ll try the other arm. And that’s when it happened….

My arm went completely numb, the room started to spin and I remember laying my head back against the wall. In the next moment, I remember voices, then thinking what is in my mouth, and then as my eyes opened two more pressing questions: how did I get on the floor and what is all over me? Yep, I passed out cold, puked all over myself and fell out of the chair onto the floor. By now the EMTs were by my side and the other patients in the room looked horrified! I was embarrassed beyond belief. What I gathered is that my blood pressure was nonexistent when that poor woman changed arms!

The EMTs wanted to take me to the hospital. I said no, so they gave me an IV (which nearly made me pass out again as they dug for my vein) in the first aid room. While getting my IV, a woman came into the room needing some help and wouldn’t you know they had to go get her daughter to find this woman’s medication. Yes, the daughter that is evidently dating or married to or some relation to THE David Thompson. So, in come David Thompson and Tommy Burleson (non state fans those are major players from the ‘74 national championship team…NCSU royalty) and I’m sitting in a chair with puke now drying on my shirt looking totally hot! At that moment I wished I was the kid that the EMTs were talking about that was unconscious behind the dumpster! Mr. Thompson was really nice and asked me if I was alright. To which I responded that there would be no more blood donation good deeds on game days. He chuckled and said he hoped I felt better soon. After the IV, I felt better and returned to my seat in time for halftime.

I kept Brian up to date with text messages. The exchanges went something like this:
Brian: “R U Ok?”
Me: “Yep, just drinking water in first aid”
Brian: “U still Ok? “
Me: “Yep, passed out and puked. I’m fine. Stay there with the boys.”
Brian: “U need me to come down there?”
Me: “Nope. Enjoy the game. Getting IV be up there soon.”

So that was our evening. The boys had a great time at the game. I had an interesting night with the wonderful ladies in first aid and still got to see the second half of the game. And now all I can do is laugh. I can now mark pass out, and meet a famous person while wearing an outfit covered in puke off my bucket list! I’m just thankful I had enough sense to come down out of the nearly top row of the stands before the big incident. Taking out a section of people would have been much worse!!

So what did you do on Saturday night?

Happy 40th Anniversary

Kenny Chesney's song "I Go Back" says it best:

"Jack Chuck and Diane painted a picture of a life in my dreams."

September 15th, 1972 is where my story truly begins. That is the day that my parents got married. And as they say, the rest is history....a pretty amazing one at that. Together they moved over 650 miles from home just days after their wedding and started their new life together. Their marriage portfolio includes stories of happiness, struggles, fun adventures, and heartbreaking losses. If you ask them, they will both tell you that their greatest accomplishments are their two daughters (of which I am so lucky to be one of them) and their four grandchildren. It's those four grandchildren that we asked about Oma & Opa, and here are their special anniversary messages from them:

Isaac (a little camera shy)

Madeline and Isaac together.
Fasten your seat belts people, we managed to capture some of Madeline's true character!

Sweet little Lucas. He seems to like the camera just fine.

We sat this weekend and pried at them for information about how they met, what their wedding was like, etc etc. It was so fun to hear all the stories, even the ones you could tell were lacking in full details or that my father was completely making up (like that they met at the bowling alley...something Anna believed for years! See I'm not the only gullible one!!)  As they celebrate their 40th year together, I couldn't be happier for the people that I am proud to call my parents, and I couldn't be more grateful that God chose to allow me to share in these two amazing people's lives. They are a real life model of what marriage is all about.

Happy 40th Anniversary Mom and Dad.
I love you both with all my heart.
(and despite what Madeline said, I'm hoping for 40 more!)

See the cousins' videos over on my sister's blog!!

Time to Ride

Sunday was an absolutely gorgeous day for a bike ride! Before heading up the mountain, we always get our weekend family pictures in.
The whole crew…
DSC_0123
And even a decent family picture. Brian and I have been taking lessons from Anna and Mark…we’ve come a long way in our photo posing skills!

The cutest kiddos on the entire planet!

It was cool 55 degrees at the top of the mountain so the kids wore their jeans. As it turns out, sweet little Audrey should have been bundled in her snowsuit. Cold brings out the devil and my sweet little niece!
Lucas made a quick recovery from getting car sick on the truck ride up the mountain and was anxious to  try out the big boy seat on mommy’s bike.
DSC_0331
Isaac rode down the mountain on the back of Opa’s bike. He made sure to let Opa know that there would be “none of this slow stuff, let’s ride fast!”

We finally got everyone buckled in and headed down the mountain.
IMG_0969
My little passenger had so much fun in the first 10 miles that he needed a nap during the last 7.
IMG_1006
It was a beautiful ride down the mountain and everyone (except poor cold angry little Audrey and whoever happened to be riding with her at the time) had a very nice ride!
After lunch and getting the kids tucked in for their naps, Mark and I decided we needed one more little adventure. The trail is maintained from the parking area at Whitetop back down the mountain for 34 miles to Abingdon. The trail does, however, go further up the mountain to the NC state line. Mark and I set off in the opposite direction from the parking area in search of the very beginning of the trail.
IMG_1013
We found it and were pleasantly surprised that it was not too far from the parking area. Trail maintenance, however, we found to be a nice luxury. This unmaintained portion was a rough ride with some big puddles.
IMG_1017
To finish off our day of riding, we refueled with some of Oma’s famous spaghetti. Lucas enjoyed it most of all!!

Virginia Creeper 2012

It all started with a conversation about a bike trail during a car ride through Virginia. Now it’s an annual event and something we look forward to all year long. 2012 marks the 7th year of our annual retreat and it was just as fun as year one. So what do we do every year in Damascus, Va besides ride bikes? A little bit of everything…

There was relaxing in the mountain air.

We have new adventures and new crazy stories every year, but one theme still remains: It’s a weekend of family and there is, quite simply, nothing better than that.

Crab Derby

On Monday morning, Southport held a kids crab derby on the waterway. The kids were pretty excited to try their hand at catching crabs. Unfortunately, the crabs seemed to have other plans for the morning and were not biting at all!

Isaac gave it his best effort. He was very determined to start.

DSC_0048

Then the excitement fizzled a bit…

DSC_0049

and anything his brother can do, Lucas thinks he needs to do too!

DSC_0050

So we packed up and headed back over to the crab dock at Oak Island. It was much less crowded and there were actually crabs at this dock although Lucas isn’t real big on holding one even if it only had 2 arms left!

DSC_0058

Please notice in the above picture that Lucas is no longer wearing his green crab derby shirt. Why you ask? Like I said, this dock was much less crowded, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t find a way to fall in! That’s right folks, we made it through the morning derby with about 75 kids and adults on one tiny dock only to go to an empty dock and have Lucas throw himself in the waterway with his father standing right beside him! He just threw that pine cone a little too hard and went right with it! Daddy was thankfully able to save him with only a little scratch to his forehead. And it was back to throwing pine cones he went!

Aunta and I caught about 10 crabs for the kids to play with.

Trouble times 4…these crabs don’t know the fun they’re about to have running from 4 crazy kids!

There’s just never a dull moment when you’re with the Raynor/Blevins bunch. I love watching these kids grow up together!!

Labor Day Fun

For the first time in I don’t know how long, we broke my unwritten no travel on Labor Day Weekend rule and headed to Oak Island to spend time with Nana, Boppa and the cousins! It turned out to be a great weekend at the beach.

The kids had a great time torturing Boppa with buckets of cold water!

IMG_0934

Lucas made his own little private tub!

IMG_0942

Even the “chef” made an appearance!

IMG_0945

The water was warm and fairly calm so the kids swam until they were exhausted. You cannot keep these children out of the water!!

Not a bad way at all to celebrate the end of summer!

Chicken Saga

It’s the newest drama to hit the Raynor farm yard. Most of you will remember that Isaac got chickens at the end of April. We’ve watched them grow from little pullets into full grown chickens. They have names, a babysitter (Aunt Cindy) for when we’re out of town, and have been living a fairly uneventful life in the back yard. So what if one of the chickens is bigger than the rest. It’s a different breed and a little older than the rest. I mean they are all happy together and get along just fine.

DSC_0001

But then the plot takes a little turn in the form of a “Cock-a-doodle-do!” [ScrEEEEEEEch!!] Hold up a second, my guaranteed hens aren’t supposed to do that. The first report came from Aunt Rhonda that she’d heard an early morning rooster. Only to be confirmed by a “Cock-a-doodle-do” that scared me to death as I walked away from the pen on Thursday.

So without further ado, I’d like you to meet Snowball our beautiful white Rooster.

DSC_0046

So we have a rooster, not a huge deal. Like I said, they are guaranteed to be hens, so we just have to take him back to Mr. Mike’s farm and trade him for a hen. Isaac is cool with that and understands that a rooster can’t live in our backyard because he’s too loud for the neighbors.

Friday morning we go out a little earlier than usual hoping to catch another “Cock-a-doodle-do” from Snowball. It is pretty cool to hear him do it. We do our daily check of the boxes and [scrEEEEEEch!!] plot twist #2. We have our first egg!!!

DSC_0025

Sure enough, it’s a pretty little green egg laid by none other than Isaac’s favorite hen, Wonder Woman.

DSC_0009

Green is his favorite color, so he is elated by finding that she’s going to lay green eggs!

DSC_0029

But hold up a second!! Mommy is a little freaked out. I didn’t read up on the whole mating process of chickens when we got them. They’re all supposed to be girls for goodness sake!! So is this egg going to be omelets or chicken nuggets when we crack it open? I’m sure not going to crack it in front of my 4 year old and have a baby chicken fall out in my pan! Good Lord, I’d scar him for life not to mention myself! Into the fridge immediately with that egg while I find someone who can tell me what to do with that egg. Thank goodness for Uncle Mark and his chicken lady. They saved the day and gave me a quick rundown of chicken sex education!

Since Friday, Wonder Woman has laid 5 green eggs, including one that was a double yolk! On Monday evening, we scrambled our first one (confirming that Uncle Mark and the chicken lady thankfully knew their stuff!) It was one tasty farm fresh egg!

DSC_0106-1

Snowball is still with us, but will be going to a new home next week. I was fine with just giving him back and sticking with 3 hens, but Isaac says he wants to get a new one. Stay tuned to see what we get this time around!
